Harry C. Katz, Ph.D.

Dean

School of Industrial and Labor Relations


Harry C. Katz, Ph.D. is Dean of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, the Jack Sheinkman Professor of Collective Bargaining and the Associate Editor of the ILR Review for the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University. Dr. Katz received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and joined Cornell University in 1985 after teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1998 he received the General Mills Award for Graduate Instruction at Cornell University.

Dr. Katz has consulted and lectured for such major corporations and unions as General Motors, AT&T, Colgate-Palmolive, the UAW, the AFL-CIO, and the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association of New York City. He has conducted seminal research on the impact of high-performance work practices on economic performance and he is world-renowned for his expertise on work practices and employment systems.

Dr. Katz's work has been published in numerous journals. His books include: Converging Divergences: Worldwide Changes in Employment Systems (with Owen Darbishire), Cornell University Press; Shifting Gears: Changing Labor Relations in the U.S. Automobile Industry, MIT Press; and Telecommunications: Restructuring of Work and Employment Relations World-wide, Cornell University Press. The Transformation of American Industrial Relations, (with Thomas Kochan and Robert McKersie), Cornell University Press, received the Terry Book Award in 1988 as the most significant contribution to the field of management by the Academy of Management.
