Judi Brownell, Ph.D. is a professor of organizational communication for the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University. Dr. Brownell teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in organizational and managerial communication and organizational behavior, and participates regularly in the Cornell's executive education program. She has served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as the Richard J. and Monene P. Bradley Director for Graduate Studies. Dr. Brownell received a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, a Master of Science from the State University of New York College at Cortland, and a Bachelor of Science from Ithaca College.
Dr. Brownell has studied the implementation of total quality management programs and has designed an assessment for the communication of service values within hospitality organizations. Her primary interests are in managerial listening behavior, women in the hospitality workforce, improving customer service, intercultural communication, and crisis communication. Dr. Brownell has conducted research that has identified the key elements of managerial listening behavior. She has completed a comprehensive survey exploring the specific communication practices of middle and upper-level managers.
Dr. Brownell has served as the vice president of the New York State Communication Association and as president of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development. She currently serves on the editorial boards of five professional journals, is past president of the International Listening Association, and is an inductee in the International Listening Association's Hall of Fame.
