About This Course
Welcome to Cornell University's Digital Copyright Educational Program. This course introduces the history and principles of copyright protection. It explains the history of copyright law, the impact of new technologies, and the developing conflicts over the protection of copyrighted material. It examines the relevant parts of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and explains how Cornell University responds as a matter of policy. Finally, this course considers how Cornell's IT policy contributes to the university's mission of cultivating citizenship in its students.
After completing this course, you will have an understanding of:
- The historical development of copyright law
- The conflicts among existing copyright law, developing
technologies, market pressures, business models, and changing
social norms
- The consequences of copyright policy violations
- The benefits of protecting intellectual property
- The economic, political, and cultural importance of achieving balance between incentive and innovation for inventions and the useful arts
