Digital Copyright Educational Program

This module introduces the legal, business, and ethical problems posed by file-sharing technology. After establishing the historical purposes of copyright protection, it examines the challenges to the law and to traditional business models posed by technological development. Examining how media owners and the government have responded to this change, it tracks digital copyright policy from the federal government to Cornell's IT department. Finally, this module examines many of the misconceptions concerning the propriety of file-sharing copyright-protected material.

After completing this module, you will be able to:
  • Explain the history of copyright law
  • Discuss the impact of technological development and changing social norms on business models and copyright enforcement
  • Explain the basic provisions of the DMCA and the consequences of violating these provisions
  • Discuss the importance of copyright protection in protecting intellectual property and in fostering a climate of creative innovation
