New Online Certificate Program from Cornell University Develops High Performance Leaders

ITHACA, NY, August 25, 2009 -- Cornell University’s ILR School and eCornell have announced the launch of a new online professional development certificate program in High Performance Leadership. The certificate program is based on the research and consulting of Professor Samuel Bacharach, the McKelvey-Grant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the ILR School and director of Cornell ILR’s Institute for Workplace Studies.

The High Performance Leadership certificate is designed to develop the critical skills necessary for today’s leaders to succeed in an ambiguous and uncertain business environment. This program will equip proven and high-potential leaders to work effectively across an organization to get things done, execute their business’ strategy to deliver results, and manage and develop others in the organization.

High Performance Leaders must master the ability to:

  • Mobilize coalitions with diverse agendas, needs, and wants.
  • Sustain momentum in order to execute strategy in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Develop and lead people through coaching relationships.
  • Negotiate across and beyond organizational boundaries.

The High Performance Leadership certificate develops all these essential skills. Professor Bacharach’s approach to leadership is based on years of observing and researching leadership in action and answering the question “What makes leadership work?”

“Leadership without the skills of proactive execution is a mirage,” says Bacharach. “I've developed what I consider to be the most integrated set of courses that assures the learner that they will be introduced to and will be able incorporate the skills that will make them high-performance leaders. My challenge for the last 30 years has been to break leadership down into a series of skills that can be mastered. To my mind, this 10-course eCornell program is the crowning gem of my career, and I believe that regardless of the organization, this program can truly enhance the proactive leadership capacity of all learners.”

The program is delivered by eCornell using its proven instructor-led structured flexibility model that combines the structure of a well-defined schedule, the flexibility of online learning, and access to subject-matter expert instructors to contextualize the learning and guide the learner to successful completion.

Students who successfully complete all the components of the High Performance Leadership series earn a certificate from Cornell University.
